REAL PEOPLE ROCK: the reluctant runner in Boston edition!
This “certified badass” running chica has been putting in some serious miles! She’s the definition of where hard work, dedication and a determined kickass attitude will take you— the answer is ANYWHERE you freaking want!! I love her MYB-approved attitude about picking yourself up after a crap-tastic run or experience and USING it as motivation to move forward and make sure that that next run (or work presentation, workout, whatever) is bigger and better than the last! We’re cheering you on!! Keep it up!!
1. Where do you live? Ten minutes out of Boston, MA, but I like to pretend I still live on the coast of Maine…so I travel back home every chance I get.
2. What’s your favorite way to Move Your Booty? I run. I lack some coordination, so the fact that all I have to do is put one foot in front of the other is quite appealing.
3. What’s your greatest MYB accomplishment so far? I would love to say running the Boston Marathon, but for me that race was a complete sh*t-show. I finished it, but barely. In the nine months since April 18th, I’ve worked my ass off to become a better runner. I won’t let my Boston experience be the end all for me. In the fall of 2011 I traveled to Conway, Arkansas and ran a half marathon in 2:10. Hard work pays off if you want it.
4. What’s your current MYB goal? I’ll be lacing up my sneakers to run the NYC Half Marathon in March 2012…and I want to come in under 2 hours. 1:59 – am I friggin’ nuts? Maybe…but that’s my current goal. It will be 11 minutes shaved off my personal best in Arkansas….that’s almost 1 minute per mile. I have goals beyond that too, but let’s just focus on one at a time.
5. What’s your favorite workout song/pump up jam? I love listening to Girl Talk..specifically “All Day”. I also listen to a lot of rap, but I find that I can’t run to the beat as it’s generally a slower tempo. When I’m in the mood for Jay Z and Eminem, I have to make a conscious effort to run faster than the music. It puts the onus back on me. I can’t just zone out and run to the beat. Well, I could, but I’d never reach my goal that way, I suppose.
6. Whats the one piece of workout clothing, equipment or accessory you couldn’t live without? One?? Just one?? If I have to pick just one…I’ll pick my Garmin Forerunner 305. I try not to live and die by my pace times, but it’s nice to be able to track improvement. I know the mileage of the routes around my house, so it’s not really about tracking how far I’m going, (although running in new places this certainly helps!) but it’s more about keeping record and looking back and saying..”Hey look…look what I did. See how fast I went.” It’s a great motivator.
7. What motivates you? Other than my Garmin times, my motivation is the prospect of getting better. Boston nearly broke me, but I came back from it, and now I’m looking to avenge it. I didn’t want to just roll over, lick my wounds and pull the whole, “Woe is me” crap. That’s not who I am…that’s not what I do. I learned from my mistakes in Boston, and the few bad cards I got dealt, then I moved forward. That’s what you have to do. Acknowledge…move on.
8. If you could share one workout secret with the world, what would it be? You don’t really have to stretch. I hardly ever do now. I’ll foam roll occasionally..but stretching? Nope.
9. What’s your workout style? Aka SWEATstyle: Certified Bad Ass. I’m pretty sure I have a certificate authenticating that somewhere too. I’m not one of those “Go Hard or Go Home” kind of people, but I try to (wo)man up and get sh*t done. If you want results you have to put in the work. You can’t just wake up one day and say, “Oh, I’m going to go run a marathon now.” You have to put in the work to get the results, decide what result you want..then make it happen.
