MOTIVATION: you can go further than you think.
Just try. One more mile. Ten more minutes. Five more reps. One more sprint. Maybe two. Just try. Your body will prove your head’s self-doubt wrong. Your heart knew all along. But you have to try. You’re stronger than you think. You’re tougher than you think. You’re more resilient than you think. You will succeed. But you have to try. And keep trying. And keep trying. You will succeed. But only if you try.

Never give in. Never give in. Never, never, never, never—in nothing, great or small, large or petty—never give in, except to convictions of honor and good sense. Never yield to force. Never yield to the apparently overwhelming might of the enemy.

Winston Churchill

MOTIVATION: improvement.
What is success, exactly? Is it some mysterious winner’s circle we finally arrive after much hard work? In my opinion, no. It’s a place we visit within ourselves all along the way with each improvement. Big wins, little wins, they all count. They should be celebrated and serve to propel us forward. Instead, success is lots of little improvements along the way.
Improvement and success are highly intertwined. You can’t succeed without improving along the way. It’s not always whether you did or didn’t do it. Sometimes, yes. But on a daily basis you must ask yourself, “Are you improving?”
And improving doesn’t just mean body or number of workouts or weights. Did you mentally win a battle, too? Did you improve your time, form, mental state or strength? Did you go that half step further today that will propel you to that next level tomorrow? Celebrate it all! Embrace it all! You are continually improving and succeeding as long as you are continuing to work your hardest and be your best. The rest falls into place naturally.

MOTIVATION: get out of your own way.
Sometimes we’re the only one standing in our own way. Whatever that thing is you’ve been meaning, wanting, thinking about doing - for years - it’s quite possible you’re the only one who is stopping you.
You’ve decided you can’t or you probably shouldn’t, don’t have time, can’t get around to it, haven’t found a way. You haven’t because the only way you’ve made it a priority is talking about it. But not doing it. Perhaps you’ve already made your mind up. You don’t really want to do it. Or you’re convincing yourself that it’s not really for you. You’re too afraid. You’re intimidated. Don’t accept that. Take a small step towards it. Stop expending so much energy convincing yourself you can’t/shouldn’t/won’t and use that energy to DO something about it.
Get out of your own way and get going.

“Life begins at the end of your comfort zone.”

MOTIVATION: unknown territory.
They say you’ll never do something you’ve never done unless you go somewhere you’ve never been. One mile past the most miles you ever run. One workout class you’ve been too afraid to try. A cycling route you’ve always been intimidated by. One rep than you did the last set. Even the smallest step past your previously determined boundaries and you’ll find someone you’ve never met. A fresh side of yourself you’ve yet to see. When we stay safely behind our limits, the view never changes. And how do we know what we can be if we don’t test ourselves?
Sure it can be scary. There can be growing pains and hard times. But through the toughest of times we can find the best in ourselves. Find a sort of comfort in your fears when you embrace the idea that it’s okay to try something that’s unknown. It’s okay to stumble along the way. It’s okay to not be the best at something new. Let go of all that. And push yourself to try it anyway. Perhaps who we really are is waiting just over that line…

MOTIVATION: goals & getting there.
We focus so much on what we’re not and what we wish we were.
Instead, focus on the journey and not so much the potential of the destination.
Focus on the everyday workouts that make you better and stronger with every rep, step and drip of sweat. Focus on the everyday choices of what we put into our bodies or how much sleep we get. It all counts. It all adds up. Our successes are in the little everyday goals. Not in one giant general big picture goal. Get specific and you’ll get there.

Finish each day and be done with it. You have done what you could. Some blunders and absurdities no doubt crept in; forget them as soon as you can. Tomorrow is a new day; begin it well and serenely and with too high a spirit to be cumbered with your old nonsense.

Ralph Waldo Emerson
